Sloppy Joe Burrito Bowl

All of the flavors of a delicious burrito, that replaces taco meat for homemade Sloppy Joe mix and puts the burrito in a bowl. A childhood, family favorite!

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 4 tbsp bbq sauce
  • 1 cup tomato puree
  • garlic salt to taste
  • ground black pepper to taste
  • onion powder to taste
  • 1/4 cup water

Optional Garnishes:

  • guacamole
  • diced onion
  • sliced radish
  • shredded cheese
  • plain, nonfat Greek yogurt
  • couscous, rice, or quinoa
  • salsa
  • shredded lettuce
  • jalapeños
  • pico de gallo
  • whole kernel corn
  • diced tomato
  • black olives
  • diced bell pepper


  1. Brown ground beef in a large skillet and drain off any fat that cooks out of the meat. 

  2. Add in all other ingredients and stir well, heating the mixture on low heat.

  3. Season the Sloppy Joe mix to taste with all seasonings, adding as you go.

  4. Serve the Sloppy Joe mix on hamburger buns, in a burrito shell, or make burrito bowls using the mix. Enjoy! 

Recipe Notes

Lean ground turkey can be replaced for ground beef in this Sloppy Joe mix. 

Any BBQ sauce can be used, but I recommend using a sweeter BBQ sauce over a smoky or tangy one.
