Okay ya’ll, (had to break out my Southern drawl for this recipe) today I’m sharing with you one of our very favorite slow cooker meals – actually one of our very favorite meals in general – Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy. This meal is so fast and easy to just throw in the slow cooker before you leave for work or take the kids to school, it cooks all day completely hands off and makes your house smell fabulous! That evening when you eat this Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy, it’s basically like a hug in a bowl after a long day. Southern comfort food at it’s finest and all made in the slow cooker!
Before we go any further, I will also add that this is my go-to recipe when taking a meal to a sick friend, or someone who just had a baby or a death in their family. This Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy always gets rave reviews and is just so comforting and hearty, perfect for any occasion! Okay, so without further ado, let’s jump in and get the party started! You guys know the drill, I like to lay all of my ingredients out first, so here I have a medium sized mixing bowl along with a family sized can of the Healthy Cream of Mushroom Soup, and two packets of brown gravy mix.
Place your chicken breasts in a five quart or larger slow cooker – I’m using boneless skinless chicken breasts (you could also use boneless skinless chicken thighs) and mine are frozen solid. I get alot of questions about cooking frozen meat in the slow cooker and I do it ALL the time. It always cooks through perfectly and we have never become sick from it, so I recommend it as just another time saving tip!
Time to season those chicken breasts, because I’m a Southern cook and I season everything – literally. So I like to add onion powder, garlic powder, and ground black pepper to these chicken breasts. Don’t add any salt unless you just want to kill your blood pressure because the Healthy Cream of Mushroom Soup and the Brown Gravy mix is salty enough. I never measure the amount of seasonings I use for this, I just add them and eyeball it but if you don’t feel comfortable doing that just start out with one teaspoon of everything.
Once the chicken breast is in the slow cooker and seasoned to perfection, Pour your Healthy Cream of Mushroom Soup into the mixing bowl and add both packets of Brown Gravy mix.
Whisk the Healthy Cream of Mushroom Soup together with the two Brown Gravy Mix packets and then add in 1 cup of water.
Whisk the water in until all ingredients are well combined and smooth.
Time to pour your gravy mixture over those chicken breasts! This is what makes this Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy so delicious and fabulous!
Time to place the lid on your slow cooker and let this little bit of comfort food cook! I like to cook my Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy on low for six hours but you can also cook it on high for four hours.
Once the cooking cycle is complete, your house will smell wonderful and your dish will look like this. But wait, we’re not finished quite yet! (I know this is brown and ugly but it tastes SO GOOD!)
Remove the cooked chicken breasts from the gravy and trim away any remaining fat or yucky parts.
Now just shred these chicken breasts between two forks. Depending on how large your plate is, you may have to do this one breast at a time.
Place all of the shredded chicken breast back into the brown gravy mixture in the slow cooker.
Give the shredded chicken breast a good stir so that it mixes well with the brown gravy mix and you’re ready to serve this Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy!

Like I mentioned earlier, this is also a perfect freezer-to-slow cooker meal or a perfect meal to cook and take to someone who needs a little cheering up.
Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy
Delicious, comforting meal that cooks hands off in your slow cooker. Leave it and forget it!
- 3 boneless skinless chicken breasts frozen
- 1 family sized can healthy cream of mushroom soup
- 2 packets brown gravy mix
- 1 cup water
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp ground black pepper
Place chicken breasts in a five quart or larger slow cooker.
Season the chicken breasts with the onion powder, garlic powder, and ground black pepper.
In a medium sized mixing bowl, combine cream of mushroom soup, brown gravy mix, and water and whisk until smooth.
Pour the gravy mix over the chicken, cover, and cook on low 6 hours or high 4 hours.
Once the chicken is cooked, remove from the slow cooker and shred between two forks.
Stir the cooked and shredded chicken back into the gravy mix in the slow cooker and serve over mashed potatoes or mashed cauliflower! Enjoy!
FREEZER TO SLOW COOKER INSTRUCTIONS:
Place the chicken breast along with the cream of mushroom soup, brown gravy packets, and all seasonings in a gallon sized freezer ziploc bag.
Using a permanent marker, write the name of the meal, the date, and cooking instructions on the bag. Also include that 1 cup of water will need added when it is cooked.
Seal the bag and freeze. This will stay good in the freezer up to 4 months.
There is no need to thaw before cooking. Cook according to directions given in the recipe.
