I will never forget my first introduction to Horseradish Sauce. Granny always loved a certain fast food chain’s roast beef sandwiches with Horsey Sauce, so every time she would receive coupons in the mail, we would load up and go grab the two for one deal. On one such summer evening, as we made the drive “to town” (we lived out in the country) in my little green Honda Civic, she convinced me that I should try Horsey Sauce on my roast beef sandwich. You see, I was more of a honey mustard lover and was skeptical about this Horsey Sauce. We went through the drive through, placed our order with “extra Horsey Sauce and Honey Mustard”, grabbed our hot sandwiches and curly fries, and then were on our way back home to devour our meal. When we arrived back at Granny’s house for our picnic on the back porch, she gave me a packet of horsey sauce and encouraged me to “just give it a try and see what you think!” with a little ornery gleam in her eye. Not knowing what I was in for, I grabbed the packet of Horsey Sauce and liberally spread it on one side of my roast beef sandwich, and then I proceeded to take a large bite.
The first thing that hit me was the overwhelming spiciness and distinct flavor of the horseradish. Wow! My mouth was suddenly set afire but not in the same way a hot pepper sets you on fire. The heat in my mouth quickly spread to my nose and I was left feeling as though I had a flaming torch jammed up both nostrils! As my eyes began to water, I looked over at Granny who was, by this point, laughing and munching happily on her roast beef sandwich that had much less Horsey Sauce drizzled over it. It was at that moment I realized I had been “got” by the best and I began to conspire my revenge. I think I ended up handing her the salt instead of the sugar one day while she was sweetening her tea and let me tell ya, the revenge was much sweeter than that tea was! Surprisingly enough, after my rather shocking introduction to Horseradish Sauce, I ended up falling in love with it and Roast Beef Sandwiches just aren’t the same without it anymore!
I hate to admit this since I’m a food blogger and I’m “supposed” to make everything from scratch…but I have always bought my Horseradish Sauce from the store. I recently bought my favorite brand again and without reading the label (I know, you should always read the labels!) I tossed it in my shopping cart and headed home with it. A few days later when I reached for said Horseradish Sauce to smear all over my Roast Beef Sandwich, I decided to read the label…only to discover one of the very first ingredients was High Fructose Corn Syrup, one of the worst possible ingredients ever known to man. With disgust and frustration, I tossed that bottle into the trash and set out to create my own Creamy Horseradish Sauce that does not have any bad or unhealthy ingredients in it. I started out with 1/2 cup of olive oil mayo, 1/2 cup plain, nonfat Greek yogurt, 2 tablespoons of prepared horseradish (make sure the brand you buy DOES NOT contain sugar!), 2 tablespoons rice vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper, and 1 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce. Combine all of the above ingredients in a small mixing bowl.
Stir the aforementioned ingredients together until smooth (you may need a small whisk for this). After stirring in the ingredients, I decided to add in 1/4 teaspoon of smoked paprika to give this Homemade Creamy Horseradish Sauce a little bit of extra pizazz.
Now that the smoked paprika is added to the Horseradish Sauce, add in 1/2 teaspoon of Pure Organic Maple Syrup. The Organic Maple Syrup was another ingredient I added in, sort of as an after thought, but it totally balanced out the spicy horseradish and tangy vinegar to give this sauce a more balanced flavor – it does not make the sauce sweet though.
Give your Homemade Creamy Horseradish Sauce one last stir and you are ready to serve it over Corned Beef, Roast Beef, Beef Brisket, or Pork Chops! Granny was right! I love a good horsey sauce, and I’m thinking this recipe is definitely a keeper. I plan to try it on my next burgers. Or, roast beef. BTW, I dropped in via What’s for Dinner, Sunday Link Up…
Horsey Sauce just makes beef so much better! She got me hooked early on!
Yum!! Now I need to make some roast beef to go with it – Thanks for sharing at the What’s for Dinner party!
