I gotta tell ya, I have a wicked sweet tooth. Since I’m resolving to eat healthier this year, I have taken an old favorite and healthified it (can we make that a word?) so that I can still indulge occasionally but completely guilt free. This Healthy Chocolate Chip Banana Bread is actually my Granny’s tried and true recipe that I have taken and replaced the standard baking ingredients with healthy ones, oh, and I kicked it up a couple notches by adding shredded carrot and dark, organic chocolate chips. You can thank me later, after you eat the entire loaf by yourself.
First, we’re going to start off with some very sad looking bananas, which actually make the best banana bread. If your bananas don’t look like something out of the Grinch’s pantry then they’re not ripe enough. Just saying.
After you grab your really four sad looking bananas, peel them, remove any of the “stringy” things that come on bananas, and place them in a bowl.
Take a potato masher (or whatever these things are called) and mash the bananas until no large lumps remain.
Now that your bananas are mashed, grab a large carrot, cut off each end, and peel it with a potato peeler just to get the outside “skin” off of the carrot. Now you want to take the carrot and shred it with a cheese grater. Just rub it up and down lengthwise over the cheese grater so that it shred into small, fine strips.
Once the carrot is shredded, it should look like this:
Toss the shredded carrot into the bowl with your mashed bananas.
Now crack two eggs into the bowl with the bananas and shredded carrot. If you’re using fresh eggs, be sure to crack the eggs into a separate bowl before adding them to the bowl with the bananas and carrot. You don’t want to get…let’s say…an “over ripe” egg in with your other ingredients and then have to toss it all out.
The next step is to measure out 1/2 cup of coconut oil and melt it in a glass bowl. I do this by putting mine in the microwave for about 20 seconds.
Pour the melted coconut oil into the bowl with the other ingredients – be careful! The oil will be hot since you just heated it to melt and you don’t want to burn yourself with hot oil.
Once the oil has been added, give the ingredients a good stir.
Time to add the organic, raw honey to your Healthy Chocolate Chip Banana Bread! This is the sweetener for the bread and it makes the bread so delicious and moist! I love using honey to sweeten recipes. My honey had started to crystallize a little and had to be heated to liquefy again so it looks a little lumpy but still worked totally fine for this recipe.
Next step, add the baking soda in for your Healthy Chocolate Chip Banana bread. Ya don’t want flat bread!
Toss in some salt!
Add in some cinnamon, cause ya can’t have good Healthy Chocolate Chip Banana Bread without cinnamon!
Give all of the ingredients a good stir and just appreciate how good it smells. Just know it’s going to smell even better when it’s baked!
Okay, so now that we’ve made it this far, it’s time to make the oat flour. I like using oat flour for my healthy baked goods, it just cooks up easier and better than whole wheat flour does and I can’t use almond flour since I’m allergic.
In order to make good oat flour, you just need whole grain, old fashioned oats (in this case, 2 cups) and a blender. Pour the oats into the blender (I’m using a small blender here so I had to blend them one cup at a time) and start blending! As the oats blend into fine powder, they will start to stick in the bottom of the blender so you may need to pick up the blender and shake it every now and then as you’re blending to ensure that all of the oats become blended well.
Once all of the oats are blended into a fine, powder like flour, pour them into the other ingredients in the large bowl.
When you have added in the oat flour for the Healthy Chocolate Chip Banana Bread, stir it well until the flour blends with the other ingredients.
When the oat flour has been stirred in, it should all be smooth like this:
Now this is where the nice turns a little naughty…although, since the chocolate chips we’re adding are dark chocolate and organic, that makes them healthy right?! I thought so too. I’m so glad you agreed with me! haha!
Stir those chips in ya’ll!
Time to toss this bread in the oven and get to baking! Spray a standard sized loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray and then pour this mixture for Healthy Chocolate Chip Banana Bread into the loaf pan.
Place the banana bread into your oven that has been preheated to 325F.
Bake the bread for 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Once the banana bread is finished cooking, gently turn the pan over upside down (the bread loaf should just fall out) and place it right side up on a cooling rack.
Once the bread has cooled, slice it into 16 slices or 32 half slices and enjoy with a cup of hot tea or coffee.

Healthy Chocolate Chip Banana Bread
A delicious and healthy banana bread recipe that your entire family will love.
- 4 ripe bananas peeled and mashed well
- 1 large carrot peeled and shredded
- 2 eggs beaten
- 2 cups oat flour
- 1/2 cup melted coconut oil
- 1/2 cup organic raw honey
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup organic dark chocolate
Preheat oven to 325F.
Place the peeled bananas into a medium sized mixing bowl and mash well with a potato masher until no large lumps remain.
Wash a large carrot, cut off each end, and peel the outside skin off with a potato peeler. Shred the carrot using a cheese grater and add the shredded carrot to the mashed bananas.
Add the eggs, melted coconut oil, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and raw honey in with the other ingredients and stir well.
Place old fashioned or steel cut oats into a blender and blend until smooth and until oats become a fine powder, like flour.
Pour the oat flour in with the other ingredients and stir well until no lumps remain.
Stir in the chocolate chips and spray a standard sized loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray.
Pour the ingredients into the loaf pan and bake at 325F for 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.
Gently turn the loaf pan over so that the bread falls out and lay gently on a cooling rack. After cooling, cut the bread into 16 full slices or 32 half slices and serve.
Recipe comes to 7 Freestyle Smart Points for 1 full slice (yields 16 full slices) or 4 Freestyle Smart Points for 1 half slice (yields 32 half slices).
